Ringing Centres

The Association has two Central Council approved Ringing Centres in its area:

Prittlewell in the Southern District which hosts a regular Saturday ringing school for applicants via the local Adult Education Centre.

Coggeshall in the Northern District which offers a range of facilities and courses as outlined below.

An 'Abel' simulator allows silent practice on the bells, and a separate lecture room is situated on the floor below the ringing chamber, thus allowing 'chalk and talk' and practical exercises to run concurrently. Handbells are available, as are toilets and kitchen facilities. The Centre has Central Council recognition, and has received a Founders Company Grant.

To assist with your training needs the Centre can be booked by any Tower, District or Ringing Group both within and outside Essex. The Centre is in contact with a number of Tutors experienced in teaching all aspects of ringing and related topics, and we are happy to run training sessions tailored to your particular requirements. To discuss your requirements please contact us by phone or e-mail. There is a charge of £10/hour per group to cover expenses.

The Centre is itself offering the following training events in 2008:

1. Three independent morning (0930-1230) workshops, similar in style to those run successfully in 2007.

Topic Date Time Information
Singles in Stedman Doubles Cancelled
Sat 17 May
0930 -1230

Singles in Stedman Doubles can prove a significant stumbling block even when plain courses are being rung successfully. The session will give the theory, and provide intensive practice. It will then move on to calling touches. Students should come being able to attempt a plain course reasonably successfully.

Raising and Lowering Cancelled
Sat 21 June
0930 -1230

Instruction and intensive practice in raising and lowering a single bell. Guidance and first steps in following another bell up and down will then be given. No previous experience of raising and lowering necessary.

Handbells - Moving on to Plain Bob

Cancelled
Sat 19 July
0930 -1230

A repeat (by popular demand) of last year's session. Theory and practice in moving on from plain hunt to Plain Bob (Minor). Students should come being reasonably confident about plain hunting their pair on 6.

To apply for these workshops please complete an application form and return it at least one month before the relevant workshop. The fee per workshop is £5, and should accompany your application. Letters of confirmation of places will only be sent out after the closing date. Tea/coffee will be available during the session.

2.  A comprehensive course in Tower Management.

Whilst this will not go ahead in 2008 owing to insufficient interest by the deadline, it is being considered for future years.  If you are interested in attending a similar course to that described below, please contact the Coggeshall Ringing Centre.

The course would comprise nine Saturday morning sessions (0930-1230) . The course would cover - teaching bell handling ; running ringing sessions ; risk assessment ; maintenance of bells and equipment ; teaching call changes ; health and safety ; teaching raising and lowering ; child protection and CRBs ; first aid ; insurance and church law ; use of simulators ; teaching method ringing, etc.

To view the proposed syllabus click here.    The cost of this course would be £tba for the full nine sessions.
